Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on

Fifth graders at East Meadows Elementary have been investing some time into learning their states. On Wednesday, May 12, family members and friends got to see the results. Students learned major cities and landmarks, wrote a state report that included interesting facts, and designed their own state shirt. Visitors enjoyed seeing their displays and answering trivia questions the students had prepared for them.

On Friday, April 30, the East Meadows Kindergarten classes went to Hogle Zoo. This is a tradition the students enjoy each year. This year was a little different because of the weather. Instead of the usual spring-like temperatures, students bundled up for the wet weather as they visited with the animals. When asked about their day at the zoo, most students commented, “It was cold.” The cats seemed to like the cooler weather though because they were quite active. Among many other animals, students enjoyed seeing wolves, giraffes, and peacocks.

Exploring a Local Wetland

On Tuesday, April 27, the East Meadows 3rd graders explored Salem Pond, a local wetland. Parents and teachers guided them through various activities. Students learned how many habitats are within a wetland and observed the plants and animals living in the marsh. They looked for signs of pollution, talked about ways to help protect the environment and gathered up trash found in the area. Many students enjoyed collecting water samples in specimen cups and observing living organisms through a microscope lens. Tage from Ms.

East Meadows concluded their winter afterschool 4-H classes with a ‘parent share.’ Students got to show their creations from the Art Technique class, their skills from the Basketball club, experiments from the Scientists Gone Mad class and will take away valuable health and wellness knowledge from the Recharge class. With 18 different clubs offered, there was a lot to see and share. East Meadows would like to thank the Department of Workforce Services, JC Penney, and Utah County 4-H for sponsoring a wonderful and affordable program for elementary students.

East Meadows Elementary 4H students had the privilege of helping to stuff Easter eggs for the Spanish Fork City Easter egg hunt! The students met after school, and made light work of filling the more than 10,000 plastic eggs that will be used in the hunt. Many thanks to the Chamber of Commerce for sponsoring the hunt and giving the East Meadows 4H group the eggsellent opportunity to serve.

Crystal Apple Award

The Crystal Apple award this year goes to the brains of our operation. Julie Hammari leads our team through her talents, knowledge, abilities and height. She has been a great leader and teacher for both faculty and students here at East Meadows Elementary. She has always been willing to change a grade level because of her nature to be flexible and ability to work in any situation. This is most apparent in her current grade level team. Julie began teaching at Canyon Elementary as an intern in the 5th grade. She then moved to 3rd grade the next year and back to 5th her third year at Canyon.
