If you have attended elementary schools in the local area, chances are you have probably participated in a favorite Christmas tradition. LaRee Liddiard, elementary school teacher in Nephi, created her own paper patterns of angels, stockings, wreaths, lanterns and other Christmas designs many years ago. Students added the tissue paper and carefully crafted their design. The decorations were then placed on windows around the school.
On Monday, November, 21 Mr. Kent Jex set up his tepee and dressed in his Indian clothing and talked with the Kindergarten and 3rd grade students about Indians. They were invited by class into his tepee where he had many items for them to view. He talked about how he had lived with the Indians for a couple of years in Arizona. This was a very fun activity to have the same week as Thanksgiving. Mr. Jex is the grandfather of Sam Jex in Mrs. Mecham’s class and Sadie Jex in Mrs. McEntire’s class. We have wrapped up another successful session of afterschool 4-H clubs. Our students have had some great opportunities in their afterschool clubs. They have been learning about a variety of things including teamwork, cooperation, and healthy lifestyle activities like jumping rope, flag football, and steal the flag. They also have been trying new recipes and some even liked spinach. Our GPS students have been learning how to operate a GPS unit and many things that it is capable of doing. Meet Suzanne Aguero. Many students may remember Mrs. Aguero for being their music teacher at East Meadows Elementary. While she worked as the music specialist, she was busy earning her teaching degree. She now teaches third grade. Mrs. Aguero loves teaching school. Every day she gets to work with her students is a day that she has a smile on her face. She has a quote on her desk that reads, “Don’t count the days. Make the days count.” This is a reminder to her of what is most important in life. In addition to being a teacher, Mrs. Aguero is a mom to five children.
On Wednesday, November 16, East Meadows 5th graders became D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) graduates. Officer Chris Sherriff welcomed family and friends as he commended the 5th graders for completing their 10-week educational training. In order to receive their graduation certificates, students participated in class discussions and activities, learned songs, and wrote thoughtful essays on why it is important to stay away from drugs and other harmful substances. Brandon Mull, author of the ever popular children’s series Fablehaven, visited East Meadows Elementary. He talked with kids about coming up with ideas for writing books. He said he has always had an imagination. He just started writing down the stories that were in his head and asking people to read them. Brandon has always been a fan of fantasy. His writings have been inspired by The Chronicles of Narnia, The Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter.
The fourth grade students at East Meadows Elementary learned about Native American culture today. Mrs. Eileen Quintana and Mrs. Natalie Billie came and showed the students many different items from their Indian culture. They had dance costumes, moccasins, pottery, hand-woven baskets, jewelry and many more items they talked about and displayed for the students. A few students were even allowed to put on the dance costumes. It was a very fun and informative assembly.

The halls at East Meadows filled with Halloween Haunts as students and teachers entered the school dressed in their costumes today, October 31. Family and friends will get to see their creative costumes as they parade around the school this afternoon. After the parade, students will return to their classrooms for parties, games and activities. The staff at East Meadows would like to thank parents and volunteers for helping make this day fun for their kids.
