This past week 3rd-6th grade students and their teachers participated in the GAINS (Growing Arts in Nebo Schools) program.  The District Dance Specialist, Melanie Fillmore, has been visiting with students and teachers to help integrate more movement into their day to day learning.  Teachers at East Meadows do such a great job creating exciting learning experiences for students in many different ways. Here are some examples of how we used dance to enhance learning.

3rd grade students did a Homophone dance. Ask them if they remember our Homophone chant (hint: It starts, "Homophones are words that sooooouuuuund the same. . . ." See if they remember the rest!)

4th grade packed a lot in as we danced about Rocks, Fossils, the Water Cycle, Utah Environments, and Clouds to help kick off their upcoming Science rotations. Ask them which was their favorite.

5th grade learned and created a PEMDAS dance that helped them remember the Order of Operations!  Have them show it to you at home!

6th grade danced in a “sea of bacteria” as they learned characteristics of bacteria.  They danced with different shapes of bacteria like spheres (balls), rods (swim noodles), and spirals (ribbons). Ask them to tell you what they remember about bacteria from the experience.

Many students are also regularly dancing the BRAINDANCE in their classrooms.  The BRAINDANCE is a series of movement patterns that helps the brain to integrate and work more effectively.

Ask your student or their teacher for more information if interested!
